Nick Ross goes NBN DEFCON 1
In Nick Ross’ leave Britney the NBN alone article here, he talks up some amazing points.  It’s an amazing example of the type of reportage that can exist in an Australia that has a great idea for a world-class broadband network, has established what seems to be a great company implementing it, and how all of this exists in a black hole of relevant discourse about what it means from a...

Bad People
I’ve been following the Chris Brown story a bit more than I would normally follow an issue like this.  Basically the guy is a violent subhuman felon who drove his then girlfriend home, punching her in the face and causing her to spit up blood all over the inside of his vehicle.  She sustained cuts on her elbows from trying to shield herself, lost her phone after he threw it from the car when...

phetdreams: Most days I’ll peruse Andrew Bolt’s comment section. If I’m feeling particularly chipper I’ll give stormfront a look in to see what the deranged fraction of a fraction of a percent believes our society should look like. Normally these kind of flights of fancy are source of humour at the idiocy of…

Creepy Apple License Agreement for iBooks →
learntoofly: “Apple is claiming a right not just to its software, but to its software’s output. It’s akin to Microsoft trying to restrict what people can do with Word documents, or Adobe declaring that if you use Photoshop to export a JPEG, you can’t freely sell it to Getty. As far as I know, in the consumer software industry, this practice is unprecedented.”  “The nightmare scenario under this...

Grapefruit Cider
You will need to have; A big pot a kilo of citrus fruit that is mostly grapefruit (half red, half usual ones), but a couple of lemons as well 800g of sugar 2L of water 1/4C of honey 1.25L soda bottles.  Do not use glass bottles, you will kill yourself and other people a 2L soda bottle champagne yeast (this is available from home brew shops for about $4 for enough to make a gajillion tonnes...

Asian Food
I was in the supermarket when a boy of about 9 said, noting an aisle sign, “Why does one say ‘Asian food’ mum?” The woman explained “sometimes Asian people have different food to us Will…” The boy was aghast, “so they don’t even have sushi?!”

citizen-cam: My feed is constantly filled with Downton Abbey I seriously don’t get it. The Georgian/Victorian/Edwardian periods were not good times to be alive if you were: Female Non-white Poor Disabled Homosexual Infirm Mentally ill Pretty much everything else except highborn white and male. Why do people (many of whom fit one or more categories above) fawn over period drama. ...

Conservatism and the Euphemism Treadmill
I wish fags were called fags again, the musk candy that is, not guys who like guys.  I don’t think we need a name for guys who like guys, but I think “fads” is a pretty lame name for the candy because they were moderately popular over a long time, not intensely popular for a brief period of time. I liked it better when fairy penguins were fairy penguins, not little penguins. I...

What if
What if you were on Deal or No Deal, and one of the cases was opened and eliminated, and instead of a money value it said “The ability to unsay something you said that one time that was not like you at all.” I’d be pretty annoyed, but I don’t know what I’d do if it came down to the $100,000 prize and that.

Apple Etymology
When you use the word “ecosystem” to mean a discrete, closed, isolated collection of largely similar things when it means a pervasive, open, inclusive description of largely different things and how they interact, I want to punch you in the throat and laugh while you choke.

somethingdarkiscoming: ““Boys are told from a young age that whatever they do will be excused under the “boys will be boys” mantra, and that “boys will be boys” mentality leads to what I call the “boiling frog” problem of women’s sexual boundaries. I call it that because if you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right out, but if you put a frog into a pot of room-temperature...

Hot dog pizza
citizen-cam: I cannot believe this idea had not occurred to mainstream pizza companies before. My friend made it this evening and it was INCREDIBALLS. It’s simply a pizza that tastes like a hot dog. Start with a standard pizza base, add tomato paste, then add sliced frankfurts, cheese, onion, bacon and BBQ sauce. Then cook for 10-20 mins as needed. And that’s it! So amazing!
